Our journey begins in Southwest Morocco, where the argan tree, Argania spinosa, has endured for millions of years in one of the driest and most demanding landscapes on earth.

Exposed to scorching sun, drought, strong winds and extreme temperatures, the argan tree remains standing. Its twisted branches tell a story of resilience. A story that began long before the first people inhabited these lands.

The argan tree grows almost exclusively in a relatively small region between the Atlantic Ocean and the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. For decades, researchers have attempted to introduce the tree to other dry regions around the world. While some trees managed to survive, achieving the same fruit quality and the same rich oil production as in Morocco proved nearly impossible.

What you see above the ground is only a small part of the story. In a region where rainfall is scarce and drought is the norm, every tree must fight to survive.

The argan tree does this in a remarkable way. Its roots travel deep into the earth in search of hidden water reserves beyond the reach of most other plants. This allows the tree to survive in conditions where many other species would disappear.

Some argan trees develop root systems that can reach depths of up to 30 meters. That is the equivalent of a ten-story building beneath the ground.
